TWENTY-ONE

When Abby left work, she walked to the Baptist Church nearby. As she approached, she saw numerous homeless people standing in line for dinner. So many, they were leaking out from the cafeteria. She noticed a woman who seemed to be organizing the people, so she approached her.

“Hi, I’m Abby Bugsly. I have a salon on Beach, where I allow one of the homeless women to sleep.”

The woman graciously nodded her head, even though she seemed busy. “That’s nice.”

“She’s been missing for a while, and I’m concerned. I thought maybe you would know her and may have seen her?”

“What does she look like?”

“About this tall,” she said, holding her hand flat at the correct height. “Brown hair falling straight to her chin. She usually wears jeans or shorts with a tee. Of course, they all do that. She seems to be competent, not in a mental state. And her name is Rose Tumbler.”

“That sounds like someone I may know,” the woman said, waving her hand at the line of people to continue walking forward. “But I can’t say if she attends these dinners or not.”

“Why is that?”

“It’s a matter of privacy.”

“Oh. I was hoping …” Abby hung her head. “So, you can’t tell me if you have seen her?”

“No, I’m not allowed. I’m sorry.” The lines in her face drew close in concern.

“Okay. I guess all I can do is ask. Thank you for your time.”

So much for the Baptist Church. On to the Methodist.

The two churches were close to each other, so she arrived in five minutes. There wasn’t a line to eat, so she figured the Baptist had the duty that evening. She walked on the campus until she saw a man who looked like he belonged there. “Sir?”

“Hello, yes, can I help you?” he answered with a beautiful smile. He was bald, dressed in a suit, which was unusual for Florida during the summer months, and wore glasses. He looked like a pastor.

“Yes, I’m looking for a homeless woman named Rose Tumbler. She’s about yay tall, brown hair to her chin. Dresses in jeans and tee-shirts. She’s been missing for weeks.”

“I know a Rose, but I’m not allowed to say anything,” he said. “I’m sorry, but I don’t have any information about her. Are you a relative?”

“No, I own the salon on Beach, and she sleeps there. I’m trying to help her get straightened out, but now she’s been missing since I discovered the blood.”

“Blood? What blood?”

Abby explained about the bloody mess she found at her doorstep.

“I see why you’re concerned. That concerns me as well. I’ve had some talks with Rose myself, so I agree she has potential to straighten out her life. If she’s alive.”

“That’s my biggest concern: is she alive?”

“I’ll keep an eye out for her, try to guide her if possible.”

“Would you let me know if you see her?”

“I can’t do that. I’m only allowed to contact the police.”

“Okay. Let me give you the name of the sergeant on the case. You can contact him if she shows up.
