Chapter 5: Tips to Getting the Habit to Stick
Having some trouble getting started on your journey to making good habits. Don’t sweat it! These things take time and they are going to be difficult. This is how our body works. To be efficient, you need to do the same things every day and when you try to change up the way that you act, your body and brain are going to resist. That doesn’t mean you are going to fail. It simply means that you need a bit more motivation, practice, and time to make it all work for you. If you are struggling, follow some of these easy tips to get you started:
• Do it for 30 days—when you want to get started on a new habit or to drop an old one, just commit to 30 days. This is just a few weeks. While it might be some of the hardest weeks you have every dealt with, you will be able to get through all of this and see some results. If you can make it through the few weeks, you will see such an improvement in your life. Plus, your brain will start to see this new activity as a habit and you will just get up and do it without thinking.
• Stick with it each day—you must stay consistent if you would like to get this habit to stick. For example, if you plan to start an exercise program, you need to try and make it to the gym each day for the first month. This might seem like a lot of overkill, but in the beginning you are teaching your body that the gym is important and that you need to go. You can loosen this up a bit later on once you have made it a habit. But only going to work out three days a week makes it take longer to become a habit.
• Start with something simple—never try to change your life overnight. This is just not going to work. It is going to leave you frustrated and failing easier than before. Start out with something simple or set up milestones to help meet your goal.
• Set a reminder—you will find that after two weeks, it becomes easier to forget about your goals. Don’t let this happen otherwise you will begin to slip back into some of your old habits. Find a way to place reminders about the habit all around you so that you don’t miss out on any days. Missing out on the activity is going to defeat all your hard work to start with.
• Find a buddy—if you can find someone who will do the activity with you, this is going to make things so much easier. You will have someone who pushes you and is a motivating factor along for the whole ride. You have to hold yourself accountable when another person is present, making it harder to just give up or go back to the bad habits that you had before.
