Chapter 18 – Dumpster Diving
Sparks’ Viewpoint
I returned to the garage after visiting Psystar and Diva. I left the flight cycle outside and walked in to see Jazz. She sat at the workbench, as before, working on her computer and a spread of tiny parts on the surface in front of her. Her fingers danced over the keyboard at fantastic speeds. I almost expected smoke to rise from it.
My legs, and for that matter, my entire body felt great as I climbed off the cycle, although my injuries prevented me from walking normally. Psystar had one hell of a drug she could sell if she could bottle her breath.
I walked up behind Jazz and kissed her right cheek. She glanced up at me and smiled. “Hey, sporty,” she said.
I replied, “Hey, nerdy. How’s the work going?”
“Pretty good. Trying to get this organ done. You done already?”
“No. I’m going to fly down to try to find my badge at the Davis ranch.”
“Be careful.”
I patted the pair of pistols against my abdomen. “I’m loaded, although I wish I had my energy weapons. I really, really need a freezing weapon, though. Some people are immune to the heat stuff.”
She looked into the garage and pointed with her shiny silver cybernetic arm. “Your guns are over there. That mutant woman made you drop them yesterday. I thought you knew.”
I kissed her and walked through the garage. In an area with a variety of bloodstains, I found my weapons. I picked them up, but then had to change holsters, as the two I currently wore were made for the 9mm pistols, and I needed something longer and taller. I left the holster system and plain pistols on the counter, grabbed some cash, and walked to the cycle.
I called out, “I might be a while.”
Jazz looked at me. “Be safe.”
“You too. I really could use that freeze gun.”
She sighed and nodded. “I’ll fit it in soon.”
“Thanks, see you soon.”
She waved, and I put the two pistols in the holding box just behind my seat. Once I flew into the sky, I looked around to get my bearing, and flew northeast to a weapon shop I frequented.
A blue streak flew through the air as someone came from the north toward me. My hand automatically went to my right thigh and patted the spot where my pistol would normally be located.
I slid my hand back to the storage compartment, entered the pin code on the four buttons on the side, and it popped open. I was just sliding my hand down to grab a pistol when the person got close enough for me to see. The person was Dierdre, the blue-haired woman who had been in trouble with the cloaked psycho a few days back.
She flew alongside me and waved. She wore boots, black leggings, and a blue leather jacket that nearly matched her long hair. She grinned and said, “Hi, Sparks!”
I flicked the button to put the cycle in hover mode and said, “Hello. I see your flight is working again.
