THE EARLIER YOU START, the more you can learn. Author, in early 1970s, “kneels at the feet of the masters”: standing from left, Bill O’Brian, Steve van Meter, and Wally Tompkins. The S&W Academy instructors didn’t rib him too much about his Ruger .357.
Mark Seiden defended Mary Hopkin splendidly. It was neither the first nor the last time I worked with Mark and his colleague, famed defense lawyer Roy Black, in murder or manslaughter cases. Mark and I later served for a couple of years as co-vice chairs of the forensic evidence committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Mark figures prominently in Roy’s book Black’s Law, in which Roy discusses four of the cases he was most proud of in his distinguished career. Two of those cases are of interest to anyone who keeps or carries a defensive firearm. One was a police officer charged with manslaughter after his shooting of a man pulling a gun on him and his partner triggered a riot. The other was a private citizen who was charged with murder and facing a death jury after a failed suicide intervention. We won acquittals in both cases, and each of those complicated trials brought out learning points that aren’t usually taught in either law school or concealed carry classes.
There are things that can be learned from people who’ve fired in self-defense. Some went through the ordeal of trial and some did not, but all found themselves treated differently after the incident. I’ve been able to reach them as a writer, and some have come to me afterward to talk because they knew of what I teach. There are probably such people near you. Invite them to give a talk at your gun club. They have knowledge that can benefit others who might go through what they went through…knowledge that will help the next good person down the road survive both the physical attack and the many elements of the aftermath.
