Regardless of the type of gun or the manufacturer, things go wrong. Murphy said it and it is true. Wads stick. Guns jam. Chokes fall in the dirt. Approaching a malfunction with a sense of humor will help you cope and the people around you will rally to your assistance, even if you are in a neck-and-neck shoot-off with them.

That will handle routine cleaning. Every 10,000 rounds or so, it is advisable to take the gun to a good gunsmith for a thorough strip down and tank dunk cleaning.

Considering all of this, is it any surprise that most fine shooters who fire 10,000 to 30,000 rounds per year prefer over/unders?

Durability

Another win for the over/under. At the risk of offending a few gas gun makers, the most expensive gas-operated semiauto made will not even come close to the lifespan of even a moderately priced (but well-made) over/under. No one can predict how many rounds each type gun will handle before it is ready for the scrap heap, but the very top competition gas gun shooters consider replacing them annually and have one or more backup guns on hand.

Ease of Repair

As a rule, the gas gun wins this one. This is especially true if you are shooting a well-known model that has been around for a few years, a gun like the Remington 1100 or the various Winchesters. You can likely find parts and service at your local gunsmith. He knows what small parts routinely break or wear out and keeps them in stock.
