Calliande battled on, unleashing storms of fire and lightning and ice at Rhodruthain, battering aside the Guardian’s attacks when he threw spells at her.

Part of her mind realized that she was pushing herself too hard, that this amount of strain atop her previous exhaustion would get her killed.

The rest of her was too angry to care.

Rhodruthain was powerful, and he wielded magic with skill, but he was too erratic. Calliande could tell that he was having trouble concentrating, that he could not focus long enough to work out an effective strategy. For that matter, she had the mantle of the Keeper, and he did not. She could charge her wards with impenetrable force and infuse her spells with irresistible power. Again and again, her attacks punched through his defenses, and he had to use the Sword of Life to heal himself. She saw Rhodruthain’s weathered face taking on a gray tinge of exhaustion, just as Ridmark’s had before he had collapsed.

The thought filled Calliande with vicious satisfaction.

Step by step she drew closer to him, hammering at him with her full strength. Magic howled and snarled between them, a dozen different flows of power lashing against each other. Rhodruthain’s teeth were gritted in a rictus of exertion or perhaps agony, tremors running through his limbs. Calliande had been in a lot of battles during her life, and she felt the momentum of this one swinging her way, felt Rhodruthain’s defense crumbling.

Her power tore through his wards and slammed into him. The blast of magical fire hurled Rhodruthain backward and into the earthwork wall surrounding the camp. He let out a cry of pain and collapsed to the ground, too weary to rise, and Calliande stalked towards him. She cast a spell that she had learned from Antenora, and a blade of searing elemental flame burst from the end of her staff, transforming the weapon into a spear with a three-foot long blade of fire.

Rhodruthain groaned, tried to rise, and slumped back against the earthwork wall, wheezing.

Calliande rested the elemental blade an inch from his throat, readying herself for the killing blow.
