26 – Interrogation

“I think you’re right about me,” Landon said, pouring himself and Martin yet another round. It was now 6:30AM, and Landon was loathe to leave this early for the S.O. He was loathe to go in, at all, today. He needed to think. He wanted to sleep. “The people in this county think I’m a pushover. That’s why all this uptick in violent crime. I’ve got to turn that around.”

Martin eyed him, a strange look on his face like Landon had just given him the opening he’d been waiting for. “Why do you think that?” the man asked.

“Because we’ve never had this kind of thing happen. Not like this. Not in Bitterroot County.”

Martin actually burst out laughing. “You’re kidding, right?”

Confused by that response, Landon’s anger stirred. “No, I’m not kidding. It hit me when the dispatch sergeant called me last night. And then it turned out to be worse than I imagined. I can’t get it out of my head that, in just over a month, Martin, we’ve had three serious crimes, two of which that have killed four of our deputies and injured a bunch more.”

Martin shook his head. “You don’t have a clue what happened even just the last year your dad was in office, do you?”

Landon was not in the mood. “Yeah, I do.”

“Have you looked?”

With what extra time?! “No. I’m too busy to go back over what happened before I got elected. Unless it’s somehow pertinent to today, it’s history.”

“Oh, it’s pertinent, and I’m betting you’re thinking that crime is worse now because you’re going on what, as a deputy, you saw that was a matter of public record.”

Well, yeah. That was true. And the few scattered arrests that he’d made.

“Your dad kept you in the dark. On purpose. We knew that. We’re actually in a quiet phase in this county, though I admit the Long Peak and Grierhausen cases went right off the charts. The rest? Ask Lorenson if you don’t want to comb through the records. The Hayborne case? Pretty standard fare, except for, so far, a lack of a definitive cause of death and only some punctures, bullet wounds, a couple of footprint casts, and some teeny paper wads for evidence.” Then, straight out of the blue, Martin asked, “How come you decided to become a cop instead of using that full ride to law school?”

Landon rolled eyes toward the man, irritated that he wasn’t staying on topic. “What brings that up?”

Martin nodded at his frown, his eyes dead reckoning on his. “Just bear with me and answer the question, okay? I have a point.” The man’s face was stone.

“I don’t see how that’s pertinent.”

“You will.”

Shifting in his seat, Landon drained his mug, then said what he wanted, but mellowed his tone. “Is it any of your business?”

“Probably not, but I’m asking anyway. Like I said, it’s pertinent, even if you can’t see that, yet.”

He sighed. Didn’t want to talk about it. Then, Give him what he wants.

Landon looked around the
