Pulling herself up to onto her elbows, Grimes resettles the eyepatch, running a finger under the elastic at the back of her head. We’re both panting like prize-fighters at the end of the fifteenth round. If my mug is as bad as Grimes’s, we’ve got the look, too. Her nose is swollen. Blood’s running down over her lips and chin like a faucet. Her unpatched eye is already blackening and there’s a visible lump on the side of her head where I pistol-whipped her.

I touch the front of my mouth and reach between my lips to wiggle my teeth experimentally. There’s movement, but not enough to make me think I might need the number of Grimes’s dentist pal. I run my tongue between my top lip and incisors, tasting more copper and salt.

‘I’m sorry, Zee,’ Grimes says, stretching out a hand. ‘Help a girl up?’

What else can I do? I grab her hand and haul her to her feet. She cries out as she forgets about her ankle and puts weight on it. I spin her round and give her a non-too-gentle shove towards the sofa. She hop-staggers into its saggy embrace and flops round to face me. At this point I’m still standing; the power position. But I’m hurting all over and my ribs are sending out sharp-pointed telegrams to my brain.
