More Patriots died on prison ships than were killed in battles.
When a Patriot officer approached Burgin about planning a jailbreak, she agreed to help. Each time Burgin boarded the boats, she looked for escape routes and passed messages to prisoners. When the time came, Burgin informed the prisoners of the plan so they could prepare. Then, over two weeks in January 1778, she led more than 200 prisoners across the frozen New York harbor to freedom. After the mass escape, the British offered a large reward for her capture. Burgin fled New York and was never caught.
