Chapter
Nineteen
As soon as Tanelith unbuckled the shield, the tall figure vanished, and she was just in one place again.
It was going to take a lot of time to get used to seeing out of two sets of eyes, directing two sets of limbs.
Time they didnât really have.
The loud squealing of wheels disturbed them both. The area in front of the marker for Erdlure shuddered.
âItâs collapsing!â Mironor said, dragging Tanelith away.
All of the ground in the clearing tremored in visible waves. The trees along the edges now waved back and forth.
Tanelith raced with Mironor to the edge of the clearing where the bright beam of light still shone. She paused before she stepped into it, looking around one last time.
The clearing was starting to cave in on itself. Great holes formed in the earth, as tremors shook it. The smell of musty dirt rose up, what little brightness dimmed by the dust being thrown into the air. Tanelith knew that the trees would fall like giant pins, covering the area in their trunks.
The magic powering the Forbidden Forest was gone. The darkness shrouding the place would lift as the power seeped away.
No one would ever find the marker for Celionael. The Hidden One would remain hidden.
She had the feeling that he would like that. Heâd been a quiet person, unassuming. Few knew of his depth of magic, or his abilities to shape metal.
After all, that wasnât a skill prized by the Egarlorsar. That was a skill of the Gilukkhaz. Erdlure kept his achievements to himself.
Heâd saved hundreds, if not thousands of the Egarlorsar, getting them down to Ithlond before the cities fell.
Then, heâd flown away, in the city of Maliwaytheld.
Elder Enwere had said theyâd only found the remains of four of the cities. Erdlureâs city had never been found.
Was it, too, flying somewhere?
Tanelith stepped into the beam, the coldness of her flight taking away her breath. She held the sword in one hand, and carried the shield in the other.
Sheâd finally found a weapon worthy of the Egarlorsar, that might turn the tide of the forthcoming battle.
Hopefully, she wasnât too late.
Elder Enwere stood in the portal room, along with Mothili.
âWhat happened?â the elder growled at Tanelith as she stepped out.
He took a step back when he saw the sword she carried.
âWhat is that?â
For the first time, Tanelith heard wonder in the old manâs voice.
âThe sword of the Goddess,â Tanelith answered truthfully.
The glare the old man gave Tanelith surprised her. She would have thought heâd be happy that sheâd found something to help their people in the coming battle.
Then again, was he ever going to be truly happy with anything Tanelith ever did?
Mironor stepped into the portal room directly behind her. He looked at Elder Enwere, then over to Mothili. âWhat happened?â he said.
âThe portal is collapsing,â Mothili said. âAndâ¦there it goes.â
The stars in the portal room suddenly dimmed. The entire city trembled hard enough to make Tanelith and the other stagger.
âThe clearing is disappearing,â Mironor said. âWe need to get clear of it, and the forest, before it tries to drain the last of our power.
