Art Insight: Grant Wood’s Women

Grant Wood was born to Hattie when she was 33; and he was the second child of four. His first art teacher and patron, she encouraged his drawing by supplying him with art materials and sheltering him under the kitchen table to pursue his craft when his father was skeptical of it. As an adult, Wood continued to live with his mother, who took care of his domestic needs until her heart attack and death in 1935 at the age of 77.

Wood’s younger sister, Nan, born in 1899, also lived with their mother as an adult. From 1917 to 1924, she lived with them in the Cedar Rapids bungalow Wood had built for his mother. When Wood was offered the use of the carriage house loft of the Turner Mortuary in 1924, Nan and Hattie moved with him, Nan occupying the studio for 11 years until she married Edward Graham and moved to the West Coast. After Wood’s death in 1942, Nan became executor of his estate and artistic legacy, and she was known in art circles for her fierce protection of his work’s copyrights and her defense of his moral character to the public.
