Chapter Twelve

“I thought I might find you here.” Carman slid into the booth across from Dylan at Switzer Land. Actually she’d known he’d be here, after using a finder’s spell to locate him. He’d left enough of his essence on the book to perform the enchantment.

Coming into the bar for a second time wasn’t nearly as intimidating as the first—like when she did the finder’s spell today, telling herself how a little one wouldn’t hurt anybody. Many witches used the invocation to find a lost earring or keys, but they say that’s how the trouble gets started. They…otherwise known as her mother…

A little spell here, a little one there, and the next thing you knew you’re crafting brooms into transportation just to relish the shocked expressions on the mortals’ faces. As much as she’d enjoy the visual, Carman never saw anyone flying on a broom. She’d learned to ignore the years of Mom’s preaching about dabbling in magic. Apparently her mother didn’t realize how much she might like to ride on a broom…at least once. The temptation almost outweighed the threat.

Carman smirked. Maybe her mother did realize her secret desires and that’s what prompted her habitual rants and anti-spellcasting speeches.

“Why would you think I’d be here?” Dylan leaned back in the booth, his brows pulled in and his tattooed arms splayed out.

She shrugged, focusing on his face and not the sexy tribal tattoo on his inner arm. “You seemed pretty comfortable here the other day. I thought perhaps you were a regular.” She hadn’t thought about Dylan’s frequency at the bar at all until Anthony insisted Dylan used to be an m ‘n’ m. She watched Dylan for his reaction. Wondering how much he would admit and if he would be honest.

“I come here from time to time.” Dylan perused her with his gaze lingering on her low cut blouse. Although she didn’t have much in the way of cleavage, she’d received compliments about her beautiful clavicle. Who knew a bony collarbone could be an asset? But she’d make the most of what she had to work with to gain the advantage. He wouldn’t always walk behind her to distract him with what she considered her best asset.

The waitress arrived and Carman ordered a margarita with an extra shot of tequila. Dylan’s curious gaze never wavered as he tried to decipher her motives. “You like the tequila, then? Not usually a favorite of most people.”

“I think you’ll find I’m not like most people.” Carman tilted her head while he absorbed her response and then blurted out her true reason for hunting him down. “I want to see the chest again.”

“I expected as much.” Dylan sighed. “I don’t know if it’s a good idea for you to go anywhere near the chest. Besides, your mother wouldn’t be happy about your involvement.”

She braced her hands on the table. Obviously he’d dug further into her family tree, especially since discovering the truth about her grandmother. “You leave Julia out of this. I don’t care if you think it’s a good idea or not.
