Robert Bingham attended Yale University from 1915 to 1918 and was a star football player there, leading his team to many victories, including one over Harvard. He was a student at Sheffield Scientific School at Yale at the same time and a member of the Book and Snake fraternity. (Yale University Manuscripts and Archives.)

This is a photograph of Robert Bingham (first row, far right) with the Yale football team in 1916. After leaving the university, he went west for his health and became one of the first forest rangers at the Grand Canyon. Shortly after the canyon attained national park status, Bingham died in 1919 from the Spanish flu pandemic that devastated the United States following World War I, killing up to 40 million people worldwide.
