SEA OF WHITE FACES. This Tacoma Country & Golf Club photograph was taken in 1948 at a banquet celebrating its founding member, Alexander Baillie. The membership seen here is as white as it was when Baillie fostered the Scottish game of golf into Washington State 50 years earlier. In 1948, golf opportunities for minorities were limited, but a few determined players were starting to forge a path to the course. (Courtesy of Tacoma Public Library.)

TUESDAY IS LADIES’ DAY. Females usually gained country club status through their husbands and fathers. The unidentified women in the above photograph are taking advantage of their weekly golfing privilege, “Ladies Day,” on the last Tuesday of June 1942 at Tacoma Country & Golf Club. Below, on the following Tuesday, the female members of the club are gathered to begin preparations for the annual women’s tournament. Pictured below, from left, are Mrs. Harry Cain, Mrs. Fred Dravis, Mrs. Augustus Clapp, Mrs. Henry Foss, Mrs. Harry Andrews, and Mrs. Thomas Curran. (Both, courtesy of Tacoma Public Library.)
