Getting to the lab is a fifteen-minute sprint that feels like it takes forever.

The roars quiet in the distance, fading like the tide going out, and though I can’t tell if the creature’s getting further away because it’s eating the feast we left it or it just has no interest in us, I’m grateful.

Dragon or not, we’re beat up and need to recover.

Though a part of me wants to seal the girls in my lab and go back down. Wants to know. If there is a dragon under the city, if a dragon soul’s within my reach…

Eros, what am I thinking?

Ruby and I sit side by side on a small bench close to the sewer door, breathing heavily in silence. Her hand snakes across the soft fabric until her fingers twine with mine. I lay a hand over Jade, and the three of us sit like that, not speaking.

But the bond crackles with the same mixture of excitement and fear and heightened lust that I’ve come to associate with surviving a near death experience. Half of me wants to pull Ruby into my lap and take her right here, and half of me wants to pass out and sleep for a fucking week.

Judging by how the golem’s hand tightens and the lingering impression of her lips on mine, she’s a fan of the former idea.

“Later,” I laugh. “After we’ve healed you.”

Jade clucks in disappointment. “I don’t know. We could be into some extreme bondage territory, here.” She pauses. “I could be into that.”

“A disembodied golem soul trapped in a medallion is kinkier than I am.” I close my eyes rest the back of my head against the cool stone wall. “I’m not sure how I feel about that.”

“I think you’re lucky,” Ruby says.

“Gods damned right,” Jade says, smug.

“Let’s take care of those wounds,” I say.

“No hurry.” Ruby’s matched my posture, head back, crimson hair cascading over shoulders that barely hitch as she breathes. “In fact, I think…” She turns her head slowly toward me, cracks her eyes. “I think I’d like to know why I’m here, now.”

“Revenge, remember?” I smile.

“That was enough, before. But there’s more.”

“Yes… you didn’t seem interested a few hours ago, though.”

She leans over until her head rests on my shoulder. Despite everything we’ve been through the last few hours, there’s no hint of the sewers in her scent. “Before I was… hasty. Ready for battle. But after the way you looked at me… that fear…”

Standing amongst the bodies of what turned out to be fifteen nacht she’d killed in less than thirty seconds. I shiver. “Yes.”

“I don’t want to see that look on your face again. Feel that from you.”

“What does that have to do with what we’re doing? Why you’re here?”

“It’s an anchor to the world,” Jade says sleepily. “I needed that once, too, if you remember.”

“Purpose,” Ruby agrees.

I take long breath. Where to begin?

At the beginning.

“You remember Inspector General Temple?”

“Mmmhmm,” Ruby says. It sounds like she’s almost asleep.

But golems don’t do that... “Are you sure you’re okay?”

She nods.
