Act 2

Scene One

Darkness. A ringing of a phone. It rings and rings and rings and then—

HIRO (groggy) Sophie?

SOPHIE (upset) Hiro.

HIRO What’s wrong? Is mom—

SOPHIE I totaled my car.

The lights gradually come up on HIRO and SOPHIE in separate places. It’s early, early morning of Day 3—before daybreak.

HIRO How?

SOPHIE A deer. I hit it. I hit a friggin’ deer because I was so upset at that stupid carcinosarcoma group you added me to on Facebook. Unadd me!!! Unadd me now!!!!

HIRO That’s . . . not how Facebook groups work. You just leave the group on your own accord.

SOPHIE This is YOUR fault.

HIRO That’s . . . really unfair.

(pause)

Are you alright?

SOPHIE NO. But yes. I only sprained my wrist. But don’t you DARE tell Mama about this. It’ll just stress her out!

HIRO I won’t.

(pause)

Do you need me to come get you?

SOPHIE I’m with my husband, Hiro. OBVIOUSLY.

HIRO Hi Da’Ran . . .

SOPHIE He doesn’t say hi back.

HIRO . . . Do you need anything? From me?

SOPHIE I need you to unadd me from that group. It was mean of you to add me. So, so mean. All those people dying. All those people losing their mothers. I don’t need to see that. I don’t need to see that.

HIRO Okay. Okay. (genuine) I’m sorry. I’m sorry.

SOPHIE The deer.

HIRO Hm?

SOPHIE I had to watch that deer die. On the side of your road—

HIRO The deer—

SOPHIE She was lying there after I hit her—all bloody and scared. Her eyes were open. Her small black eyes just filled with death. And she was moving. Moving, Hiro! Her breath pounding against the ground. And her legs . . . her legs. At first I thought they were twitching but then I realized . . . she thought she was running, Hiro! She couldn’t even stand but she thought she was running . . . running away from me. She didn’t know she was dying Hiro! She didn’t know she was dying!
