Chapter Ten
The problem with helping solve cases like this is it makes me question the human race. What kind of father cares more about people finding out his wife had an affair than finding out who is responsible for the deaths of his twin daughters? I canât even fathom it. Cam and I leave Quentin and Officer Brooks to finish interrogating Carlisle, and we head back to Cup of Jo. I need a strong coffee to steady my nerves. I know thatâs not how caffeine is supposed to work, but since Iâve been drinking it all my life, thatâs the effect it has on me personally.
Jamar is putting on a show for a group of women when we arrive. Heâs spinning them around and dipping them. Theyâre eating it up, laughing and having a great time.
Robin is at the register, shaking her head. âI donât know about him,â she tells me.
âHe likes tips,â I say. âIâm pretty sure thereâs only one girl he wants to dance with these days.â I bump my shoulder into hers, and she smiles.
âIâm pretty sure as my boss, youâre supposed to tell me Iâm stupid for dating my coworker.â
I look over my shoulder to the kitchen where Cam is whipping up another batch of muffins. âIâm pretty sure saying that would make me the biggest hypocrite on the planet.â
She laughs. âYeah, you might be right about that.â
âOh, there was a young girl in here earlier. She was looking for you. I think her name was Giselle.â
Giselle came to talk to me? She must not have gone to school then. âDid she leave a message?â
âYeah, she said she needs to talk to you as soon as possible.â
I look back at Cam again. Heâs going to want to come with me, but heâs making muffins right now, and I donât want to wait. âIf Cam comes looking for me, will you tell him Iâll be right back?â
Robin cocks her head at me. âYou donât want him to know where youâre going, do you?â
âI just think Giselle might open up more if I go see her alone.â
âI take it this is for a case then.â
I nod.
âShould I tell Cam youâre with Quentin so he doesnât worry?â
âNo.â That might actually be worse. âTell him you donât know where I went, which you donât actually know.â
âI think I can guess youâre going to Giselleâs house.â
I mime zipping my lips.
âOkay, Boss. Just do me a favor and convince her to talk to you somewhere else so Iâm not lying to my other boss in there.â She dips her head back in the direction of the kitchen.
âDeal.â I quickly grab my purse and hurry out of the café, ducking around Jamar to avoid being dipped on the way.
I drive to Giselleâs house and park in the driveway. Thereâs only one car in the driveway, so I assume Giselle is home alone. Her parents are probably at work. I knock on the door.
âYou got my message,â she says when she opens the door. âCome inside.
