Chapter Ten

The problem with helping solve cases like this is it makes me question the human race. What kind of father cares more about people finding out his wife had an affair than finding out who is responsible for the deaths of his twin daughters? I can’t even fathom it. Cam and I leave Quentin and Officer Brooks to finish interrogating Carlisle, and we head back to Cup of Jo. I need a strong coffee to steady my nerves. I know that’s not how caffeine is supposed to work, but since I’ve been drinking it all my life, that’s the effect it has on me personally.

Jamar is putting on a show for a group of women when we arrive. He’s spinning them around and dipping them. They’re eating it up, laughing and having a great time.

Robin is at the register, shaking her head. “I don’t know about him,” she tells me.

“He likes tips,” I say. “I’m pretty sure there’s only one girl he wants to dance with these days.” I bump my shoulder into hers, and she smiles.

“I’m pretty sure as my boss, you’re supposed to tell me I’m stupid for dating my coworker.”

I look over my shoulder to the kitchen where Cam is whipping up another batch of muffins. “I’m pretty sure saying that would make me the biggest hypocrite on the planet.”

She laughs. “Yeah, you might be right about that.”

“Oh, there was a young girl in here earlier. She was looking for you. I think her name was Giselle.”

Giselle came to talk to me? She must not have gone to school then. “Did she leave a message?”

“Yeah, she said she needs to talk to you as soon as possible.”

I look back at Cam again. He’s going to want to come with me, but he’s making muffins right now, and I don’t want to wait. “If Cam comes looking for me, will you tell him I’ll be right back?”

Robin cocks her head at me. “You don’t want him to know where you’re going, do you?”

“I just think Giselle might open up more if I go see her alone.”

“I take it this is for a case then.”

I nod.

“Should I tell Cam you’re with Quentin so he doesn’t worry?”

“No.” That might actually be worse. “Tell him you don’t know where I went, which you don’t actually know.”

“I think I can guess you’re going to Giselle’s house.”

I mime zipping my lips.

“Okay, Boss. Just do me a favor and convince her to talk to you somewhere else so I’m not lying to my other boss in there.” She dips her head back in the direction of the kitchen.

“Deal.” I quickly grab my purse and hurry out of the café, ducking around Jamar to avoid being dipped on the way.

I drive to Giselle’s house and park in the driveway. There’s only one car in the driveway, so I assume Giselle is home alone. Her parents are probably at work. I knock on the door.

“You got my message,” she says when she opens the door. “Come inside.
