We stumble into the Casino’s hotel lobby, and I cling to Clive like he’s my life raft on a sinking ship. I’m not sure if he’s stumbling because he’s tipsy or because I am, but he’s allowing me to use him for stability, and I don’t need a reason why.

I can’t tell if my feelings for him are making me warm or if it’s the wine making me both tipsy and hot. I’m tipsy enough that it calms my nerves slightly and allows me to push my boundaries a little bit to see where he stands. But I’m not even close to being drunk, so I know I’m still sober enough to feel this for him consciously.

We’ve been acting so loving toward each other, and our kisses are magical. We’ve been the poster for the perfect newlyweds, but it’s not enough that we’re only acting. I want something more to happen between us, and I’m sober enough to realize it’s not the wine making me think it.

I know he’s been so loving and gentle with me because he’s working so hard to make our arrangement seem real to everyone around us, but it’s causing me to fall even more for him. Something in his actions tells me that I’m not the only one falling for real. I want us to be this loving and friendly toward each other under actual circumstances.

We’re married now, and I want proof of it. I just need to void the contract and show Clive I’m ready to take on the complete duties of being his wife.

Clive helps me into the elevator and presses the button to our floor. I know what I need to do; it’s just a matter of picking the perfect moment.

My heart is pounding so loud I swear he can hear it. I’m so nervous. Every fiber of my being wants him right now, but I know that after the lame reaction I gave him to the kiss earlier, I will have to do something to prove my feelings.

Neither of us speaks the entire ride, and I’m trying too hard to control myself to ask why he’s quiet. Everything in my body tells my mind to pounce right here in the elevator. But my mind is still needing some convincing.

I watch the numbers go up as we reach each floor, and my heart is nearly beating out of my chest. Finally, just as I’m almost ready to make my move, the elevator dings, and we’re on our floor. I sigh as he walks out the doors and down the hall. I trail behind him, waiting for him to use the key.

My heart stops as soon as I hear the key click and watch him push open the door. When we’re inside, I watch him slip out of his suit coat and lay it on the edge of the bed as he reaches for a hanger in the closet. I feel myself inching closer and closer to him.

Once he hangs it up and shuts the closet door, I’m standing at the edge of the bed.
