CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Benjamin Malt wasnât entirely sure what he was doing out here, in a field containing little other than a solar panel array, the sunlight reflecting off it until it was bright enough to hurt his eyes.
It had all seemed like such a good idea last night. He would meet up with a hot young woman, one who was clearly pretty adventurous if her messages to him had been anything to go by, and probably have⦠well, at the very least, a story that he could tell the guys. Maybe more than that, depending on how things went.
Maybe he should just have met up with her last night, but Benjamin wasnât quite intrepid enough to go meeting up with strange women outdoors in the middle of the night. There was always too much of a risk that it was a scam, or just something designed to make him look stupid.
The choice of spot today didnât exactly fill Benjamin with confidence. A field? Sure, they could have a picnic or something. Hell, heâd brought a picnic, with a few sandwiches, a couple of bottles of beer, just something to set the mood. But a field with one of the big solar arrays that lay scattered around the town to provide it with some of its power?
Maybe the point was that they would be harder to spot there; maybe the idea was to give them both at least the illusion of privacy. Besides, heâd promised Izzie online that she was the one who got to pick the spot. If this was what she was into, then he would find a way to work with that.
âIzzie?â Benjamin called out. âIâm here!â
She had to be here somewhere, and it wouldnât exactly be easy to spot her among the solar panels that made up the array. Maybe she was heading towards him now, or sneaking up on him. Maybe that was a part of the game that she wanted to play here.
If it had been a different girl, Benjamin might have just headed home. He generally liked things a lot more straightforward than this. But some of those pictures sheâd sent over to him⦠sheâd been so hot, and her messages had made it clear that she was more than interested in him. She seemed to know exactly what she wanted, and it lined up with everything he wanted from today, too.
So Benjamin played along for now. He wandered through the solar panels, trying not to look around too carefully, letting her think that she could sneak up on him. Maybe he could catch her out as she did so, and see where things led from thereâ¦
Benjamin stood there thinking about the possibilities of that. He looked into one of the solar panels, using its surface as a mirror, adjusting his hair slightly to make sure that it was perfect.
He saw a flicker of movement in the reflection and started to smile as he began to turn.
âIzzie, is that-â
He didnât finish the sentence, because that was the moment that a cord dropped around his throat, drawing tight.
