CHAPTER 16
The elevator stopped with a tiny ding as it stopped at Svenâs apartment. The door swooshed open to reveal a small room. A chair and loveseat dominated the space but the main focus was a black door in between the two. The dark blue of the fabric was quite attractive the way it contrasted against the glossy, teal floor.
The black lacquered frame of the door blended seamlessly in with the black marble that ran up the wall. It looked like an impenetrable fortress. So much for homey touches, I thought as I reached the door. Self-consciously I added a thick layer of glamour. I perfected my skin, made my essence radiant, trickled a mist of vanilla over me, and plumped my lips. I bit my lip. The fact that I was going into his home shivered over me. I reminded myself I was here on business but couldnât help sweeping on a dusky smoky eye and glossy red lips before I punched the lit circle next to the door. Inside I could hear the doorbell echo around what sounded like a fairly large place. My nerves tingled with awareness as the last of the bells faded away. Footsteps stopped on the other side of the door.
The door opened to reveal a very clean, very well rested looking Sven. He was also a half-dressed Sven. Well, he might as well have been.
My mouth went dry looking at him. He had those same types of jeans I loved, but it was the shirt that did me in. Heâd only bothered to button the last two buttons, so his glorious chest rose and clefted into what hinted at a perfect six pack underneath those last two buttons.
I was so busy staring that he gave one of those laughs I was beginning to adore and pulled me to him with a flirty smile. He shut the door behind me and came back around to my front.
âOk, you can ogle me now,â he said with a wink.
I swatted his arm. âScrew ogling. Where in the hell did you disappear to at the Gathering? I almost died!â I said, slapping his chest.
âYou almost what?â his eyes widened to show the whites.
âYeah, fucking Thomas-â
âDonât go near Thomas. Heâs bad news,â Sven said, a cloud coming over his features.
âYou think?â I asked with a snort.
He pulled me close, to wrap me in a hug. âI am so sorry you had to go through that. I couldnât get away from Jerrick any sooner. I promise I will assign you a guard next time youâre with me anywhere you arenât comfortable. Your safety means more to me than anything.â
The gentle hum of his words vibrating against my chest and the warmth of his arms did a lot to calm me down. I snuggled in for a tight hug before pulling away.
âWhat are you doing with your clothes half off like that?â I asked with a raised eyebrow.
He gave a shrug of those amazing delts, and I watched the movement ripple all of those gorgeous muscles.
