i carry your heart with me(i carry it in my heart)

For just a second, Noah is back in his Studies of Early American Poets class, listening to one of his classmates read aloud the very same E. E. Cummings poem. The voice had curled around the edges of each word, a lover’s embrace for the ears, and Noah remembers how badly he wanted to turn around, to see who the reader was. He’d been afraid to draw attention to himself, though, and refrained until the end of class. Too late, it turned out, for the rows behind him were a jumbled mess of bodies making their escape. Now he feels like he should know who it is, that he’s heard the voice before, impossible as that is.

Noah loses himself in his thoughts as they drive, jogged out of them only when Daniel stops the car. He realizes suddenly what poor company he’s been, and he thrusts out a hand at Daniel, a little startled by the strength in Daniel’s warm grip. The soft upward curve of Daniel’s mouth is half-hidden by the layers of grease paint decorating his skin, but it has Noah trapped all the same, caught up in trying to find some hint of the face beneath the mask.

“Thank you for the ride, and I apologize for, er—”

“I’ll see you around, Noah, and if I don’t talk to you before then, have a nice Christmas.”

Daniel holds on to Noah’s hand a beat longer than polite standards require, long enough for Noah to feel his face heat, and when he lets go, his fingers brush the pulse point in Noah’s wrist. Noah absolutely does not blush. He does, however, offer up a shy smile before he slips out of the car.
