The Degree Confluence Project

The goal of this game, according to the website www.confluence.org, is to “visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location.” That simple request has fielded more than 90,000—and counting—photographs of such intersections around the world.

To begin, you need to create an account on the host’s website. Once you’ve registered, select a confluence to visit—there is one within 49 miles of any locale—and submit a plan for your trip. The webmaster will be able to tell you if there are any other plans being processed regarding the confluence you wish to visit. The first person to the confluence, like the race to the North Pole, will be the person credited with the first find. (Though both will be credited for the visit.)

To receive credit, you will be asked to get within 100 meters of the confluence, document the visit with two to five digital photos, and write a short description of what is there. Getting this close is fairly easy if you have a GPS unit, more challenging if you’re using a map and compass.
