Ma sidestepped a six-clawed swipe meant to take off her face. She couldn’t see her attacker, but she was getting much better at tracking its movements by using her wind magic as an extended sensory net. She could also use her wind magic to attack it. That was the tricky part. She could only attack it when the monster closed in and attacked. One slip-up and she was a goner.

Good thing the high-stakes environment suited her. She blocked out everything that wasn’t essential to surviving or fighting the monster. This would have been a much easier task had she not had to worry about fighting the other victim’s monster too. The hapless student had survived two major attempts from her respective monster but how much longer could Ma keep this up? Sooner or later she was bound to slip up, and one of them would get injured or killed.

This meant Ma had to kill the monsters first. How?

She sensed the creature’s jaws snapping at her and glided back a step. At the same time, she slammed a wind fist into its invisible snout. The monster barked in pain and backed up.

Whatever these creatures were, they seemed large but relatively lightweight. Also, while she couldn’t confirm it with her eyes, she knew that fur covered them. Lots of fur because all those hairs allowed her to toss them extra far.

Too bad such attacks didn’t exactly do any damage to the creatures, at least, no damage that she could tell. It only stunned them for a few moments. They always picked themselves up and resumed their attacks.

What did the monsters want? To kill? To maim? Why were Ma and the girl with the flower doomed?

Launching off the ground with her wind magic, Ma backflipped over a tombstone as gigantic invisible claws obliterated it into stone chunks. She landed and backslid on the soles of her shoes across the grass. She looked for the doomed student but didn’t see her anywhere. Ma maneuvered around a gravestone and saw the girl. The girl’s monster had her cornered against the waist-high wrought iron fence surrounding the cemetery.

Not on my watch. Ma sent a surge of wind at the girl’s monster as it attacked. Then a massive paw shoved Ma to the ground.

It happened so quickly. The invisible creature loomed over her with its paw on her back, pressing her chest into the grass. The paw wasn’t as large as its claws suggested and was surprisingly padded. Its six claws were sharp as hell. Their tips pierced her shirt and skin.

“Get…off!” She drove a wind spike up into its underside, and the creature yelped and leapt off.

“Ahh!” The doomed girl screamed in agony against the iron fence.

Ma blasted the air in front of the doomed student’s body. The crunch of bone told her she was too late.
