The following morning, Friday, I made good on my promise to go with Janet to interview Nathan Watkins—or Boo as he was known on the street. But first I needed to bring the rest of the team up to speed and see what they had found out the previous afternoon. Thus, we assembled in my office at eight o’clock that morning.

“So, what have we got?” I asked when everyone was settled. “Anne, what about Eddie’s alibi? You checked it out, right?” I asked. Eddie, I already knew from my own interview, was a narcissistic kid with a drinking problem and a severe case of affluenza.

“We did, and he doesn’t have one, not for the hours between twelve-thirty and two, but I doubt that it matters. His relationship with the truth is strained, to say the least… Okay, so we went to the Sorbonne and spoke with Laura. She said Eddie and two friends entered the bar at around ten-thirty and all three were already drunk out of their minds. She said it was just after twelve when they left, staggered out of the bar, all three of them. We talked to both of the friends, Alex Pruitt and George Martinez. They both said they left the Sorbonne around one-thirty, which was either a lie or they were too drunk to know. Either way, none of them have an alibi.”

“Well,” I said, “if anyone’s to be believed, it’s Laura. Did you ask him about Club Suave?”

“We did,” Janet said. “Well, I did. He said they didn’t go there. He said they ate barbeque at Rusty’s—Rusty doesn’t remember them, I checked—and then they went to the Mellow Mushroom—I couldn’t find anyone there that remembered them either—and from there they went to the Sorbonne…” and then she ran out of steam, glanced at Anne and shrugged.

“So that means the suspect pool just grew by two,” I said. “They could have gone from the Sorbonne to Club Suave, all three of them, and all three could have been involved in the murder. Hawk, you and Anne go talk to the people working in that arcade under Eddie’s apartment. Maybe that coffee shop is an all-nighter and somebody saw them come home. Maybe you can provide them with an alibi.”

I turned to Lenny. “What’ve you got for me, Lenny?”

“Well, I did some digging into Sam Wheaton’s background, like you asked.”

“Okay,” I said. “Let’s hear it.”

“Well, yeah, okay,” he said as he flipped through the screens on his iPad, and then put it down on his lap.

“I have it all written up for you,” he said, handed me three pieces of paper clipped together, and like sets to each of the others in the room, then picked up his iPad and began.

“So Sam Wheaton got his start on Wall Street right after he graduated from NYU—New York University—with a degree in Risk Assessment, but in 1988 he was fired for an unspecified Regulation D infraction… My guess is that he was manipulating funds, but what do
