Chapter 15

“Move, move, move!” Matt yelled. “We’ve got less than fifteen minutes before they’re too far up the mountain for us to get past them. Christin, get word to the others! Ashley, get Bob ready to roll! Dave, get the truck going! This is not a drill. We are bugging out right now! Let’s go, go, go!”

Everyone burst into activity as an exhausted Ryan ran into the house to get a quick bottle of water and the last of his gear. He had landed in the front yard less than two minutes earlier, bringing a report of angry townspeople heading for the mountain with guns. The chief of police was in his Jeep at the head of the vanguard, and they had several vehicles, plus a few men on horseback headed their way.

Everyone burst into action, gathering up last-minute supplies, weapons, and ammunition. Christin cupped her hands in front of her mouth and yelled, boosting the sound to carry all the way down to the creek and up to Bob’s house. Ashley tossed a backpack at her as she sprinted up the gravel driveway to help the old man gather his things. It took them barely five minutes to assemble in the front yard around the truck, loaded with all the gear they could cram into it.

“All right,” Matt said as they put the last box in the bed of the pickup. “We’re going to try to get out of here before they blockade the base of the mountain. There’s only one road out, so if they’ve got it blocked, we’re going to have to fight our way out. I don’t think there’s any chance of talking them out of hurting someone this time, do you?” He looked around at a circle of grim faces. No one said anything, so he continued, “Okay, then. Dave, you’re driving. Bob, you and Angie are in the cab. Ashley will stay low in the bed of the truck as our medic. If it comes to a fight, Ryan will grab Christin and handle the air attack. If we have to, Bob and Dave can shoot. Angie stays in the truck and keeps it running no matter what. Everybody understand?”

They all nodded, except Bob, who said, “I’m driving. I’ve been wildcattin’ up and down this mountain sixty years. Ain’t nobody knows these roads like me.”

“Works for me,” Angie said. “I’ll be the one cowering on the floor of the truck wishing it would rain.”

They loaded into the truck, which sat heavy on its axles with people and equipment. Bob put the old pickup into gear, and Christin lovingly patted the side of the bed and murmured encouragement to the battered vehicle as they left the cabin behind. They made it down to the base of the mountain without incident, but as the ground flattened out to either side of the narrow mountain road, they came upon a hastily erected roadblock. Turned sideways across the road was the chief’s Jeep, with a pair of trucks flanking it.
