It had been sent a couple of hours after their argument judging by the time on the text. The next text said:

Pls call

Hendrix fetched another beer and sat looking at the phone, trying to ignore its message. Yet despite the weekend’s events, he softened. He made the call, but Tom didn’t answer.

It was a woman’s voice, “Hello.”

“Oh. It’s Aitch here, have I got the right number? I want Tom Giles.”

“Aitch, hi. Thank goodness. It’s Janet.”

Hendrix had met Tom’s wife on a few occasions: the odd award ceremony and press junkets, and the healthier events on the Strange Phenomena calendar. He didn’t feel like being civil, but forced a line of small talk.

“What are you doing in the office? Trying to prise your husband away for the weekend?”

Several seconds of silence made Hendrix tense.

“I’m at the hospital, Hendrix. Tom’s been hit by a car.”

Hendrix gazed into space. The news sank in slowly like a coin might drift to the bottom of a swimming pool. “You’re joking,” he mumbled, then fell silent once more. “Sorry. My God. Of course you’re not joking. What happened?”

“I don’t know the details. Several people have been badly hurt, a hit and run they think. Tom’s about to go to theatre.”

“Christ.”

“We’ll know more in an hour or two.”

“Janet, look, I’ll come straight there. Whatever you need. Anything, let me know. Which hospital are you in?”

“No Hendrix. Don’t come here. Tom refused the anaesthetic until he’d spoken to you, but we couldn’t get through. I had to promise to give you a message as soon as I could. He wants you to carry on with the story.”

“The Mendel story?”

“That’s all he said. It was a huge effort and I don’t know which story he means.”

“I’m sorry, Janet, that’s crazy. I’m going to come over.”

“No, Hendrix. Listen. Tom was very insistent. He wants you to finish the story. Please do it, Hendrix. Tom might not make it, and this is the only thing he asked for.”
