“The old fool!” said Phyllis Tyson. “Maggie’s well rid of him!”

“The girl’s the one I told you about,” Roger said. “Remember? The one who wore that awful gardenia fragrance? I had to ask her to cease and desist.”

“Are you sure he isn’t drinking?”

“He’s drinking. But he’s sober.”

“Millie will roll over in her grave.”

“Well, Millie was a bit offbeat herself, remember.”

“To tell you the truth, I’m glad, for Maggie’s sake. He’s too eccentric. Maggie wouldn’t have been happy with him — I don’t care if he is a senator.”

“I don’t believe a word of it, but you keep telling yourself that, and maybe you’ll convince yourself. Anyway, I’ll be here a while; don’t wait up for me.”

“What’s going on next door, Roger?”

“Everything’s held up by the weather; they haven’t even started rescue operations.”

“Raymond keeps calling here; I don’t know what to tell him.”

“Tell him not to get his hopes up. It doesn’t look serious.”

“As a matter of fact, he sounds quite concerned.”

“I’d understand a lot better if it were Raymond bent on marrying this Eliza Doolittle of Bob’s. Raymond could show just cause for insanity, after years of cohabitation with Faith.”

“She’s been through a lot, Roger.”

“She doesn’t know it.”

“Now, what does that mean?”

“That means she doesn’t see any more to life than compost piles, Philharmonic concerts, and the lovely blue-black color of an evening sky in winter on the Hudson.”

“I can see you’ve had too much of her today.”

“Slightly overexposed, yes; it’s like too much sun, it can poison your system.”

“Don’t get yourself worked up or you’ll have too much to drink, and tomorrow you’ll feel it.”

“I’ll feel it anyway. The only one getting any younger is Bob Anderson.”

“I do hope Faith’s all right; she means well.”

“I suppose she does…. She’ll be all right. Tell Raymond not to worry. I’ll see her through it and then take her up to the Dorset.”

Then Roger Tyson hung up and went back to join the Senator at the bar. It was ten-thirty P.M.
