Chapter 13

“So you thought you heard a kitten crying?” The police officer taking down his notes looks up at me.

Though his eyebrows are raised skeptically, I stick to the story. “Yep. And my sister and I are suckers for animals, so we had to check it out just in case it was hurt.”

“And the door was just unlocked like this?” He scans me again with his gaze, looking for obvious holes in my story.

“Yeah. Maybe that’s how the kitten got in.”

“Did you find it?” The police officer looks semi-curious at this point.

I shake my head. “I think Bear scared it off.”

“Uh huh. Sure.”

My phone rings in my pocket, and I pull it out to look at the name on the screen. It’s my aunt. I send the call to voice mail.

“Did you or your friends touch anything at the scene?” the police officer asks.

“No, of course not.”

My phone rings again. Aunt Mary. This can’t be good. She never redials this quickly when I don’t answer the first time. I send it to voice mail again.

“Did you say that you ran a paranormal TV show?” the officer asks.

I nod even though I’ve already told him this a couple times. Most cops I’ve met are pretty skeptical.

“We research supposed hauntings and sightings and stuff like that and try to figure out what’s really going on,” I say. “If it’s not real, then we debunk that and show the viewers. But if we can’t figure out what’s going on, we should say that too.”

“What exactly are you out here investigating, then?”

His question makes me pause, and I wonder what I should tell him. We didn’t really discuss that part of our story before calling the police.

The truth spills out before I can stop it. “We’re looking for an arcade game that may or may not have been part of a government experiment.” I don’t really want to mention Chris’s name or his disappearance, because the cop might get even more suspicious and try to figure out if we’re involved in that too. We’re not, of course, but he doesn’t know that.

He blinks, mouth open, then shuts it. I guess that whatever answer he thought we might give, it wasn’t that. No one would really expect that.

My phone rings again, and the police officer takes that moment to excuse himself to go talk to his companions. Aunt Mary’s calling again, and I decide I’d better answer it before she really starts getting angry at me.

“Why are you calling? We’re busy. Did someone die?” I regret the question just as it leaves my lips, but I can’t take it back.

Aunt Mary pauses. “No, not that I’m aware of. Why didn’t you answer the phone when I called you the first time? I need to know that you’re available if I need to reach Jess.”

A throbbing starts right behind my ears. I do not need to deal with this right now. “Why do you need to reach Jess? She’s fine. I’m fine. Everybody’s fine.”

I come off snappier than I intended, and she sniffs.
