The dream was far too familiar, one that had tormented Maya for months, if not longer. She was wandering a maze, looking for the Moonlight Killer, only these days, it wasn't a maze. It was the bunker. The same bunker from which Maya had rescued three of the women he'd taken.
Maya moved forward, flinching as the Moonlight Killer fired back at her, somewhere ahead. He wasn't wearing his mask in the dream, so that she could see Frank's face as he backed away through the twists and turns of the bunker, trying to kill Maya.
There were tripwires there that hadn't been there in real life, forcing her to tiptoe over them. Maya's heart was pounding, her palms sweaty as she navigated the maze. She knew she had to take out the Moonlight Killer before he could kill her. She spotted him ahead and took aim with her gun. But before she could shoot, he disappeared into the shadows.
Maya chased after him, her heart racing as she tried to keep up with his quick footsteps. It was like trying to catch a shadow in the darkness. But she didn't give up. She couldn't afford to.
Maya reached the central chamber, where the women had been held in cages. Only now, the only woman there in one of the cages was Megan, while in front of her...
Imogen's body hung there, alongside, improbably, Rose Kallen. Maya broke open the lock on her sister's cage, but she couldn't stop; she had to keep moving forward to catch the Moonlight Killer.
She moved through into the control room of the bunker, the room where she'd confronted the Moonlight Killer before, while he held Megan hostage.
It wasn't Megan now. It was Lucy, held tight back against him. His mask was back in place, too, so that Maya couldn't see his face.
Maya lifted her gun, ready to fire. Even as she did it, though, he lifted the trigger linked to the explosives in the bunker. He pressed the button.
There was no delay this time, no time to get clear. The bunker simply exploded around Maya, flames tearing around her, pain ripping through her...
Maya woke up in a cold sweat. It was still dark outside, but her phone told her that it was almost morning. Time to start the day, trying to find an answer in this case.
But what answers were there? She'd run down her first lead last night. What else was there?
Maya found herself thinking about the Moonlight Killer. Maybe it was just the dream, but she couldn't drag her thoughts from Frank Hanratty.
What had he said when she'd gone to see him? That there was more than one murder? Maybe the key to solving Rose's murder lay in finding who else had died.
