Jaxson took the evidence and drove off to the station. Olivia offered to walk me home, but Han said that he would. He told her that weâd drop her and Hercules off at her place first, and then heâd escort me back to Caldwell Crest. He was a natural leader, always taking charge and looking out for others.
Han knelt to pet Hercules and asked him if he was taking good care of Olivia. The dog nuzzled Hanâs shoulder as if he understood the question. When Han stood up, Hercules seemed to stand at attention at his side. He glanced up at Han as if looking for orders. It was weird. Iâd only ever seen the dog walk next to Olivia, but he seemed to have respect and adoration for Han.
This was the first time Iâd seen Hanâs car, and I was duly impressed. It was a gorgeous Tesla painted matt black with a sleek black leather interior. It was smooth, quiet, and classy. It suited him perfectly.
We dropped Olivia off at her home, which was close to the trailhead. I thought I saw Han pull a dog bone out of his pocket and slip Hercules a treat before we left, but I was busy saying goodbye to Olivia, so I wasnât sure. It was clear that the dog adored him, though.
The drive back home was much too short. We chatted a bit, and I filled him in about my two visits with Gaspar. Like everyone else here, he enjoyed the story but was rather unimpressed by the fact that I had been visited by a ghost. A ghost! Apparently, even if youâve never seen a ghost yourself, if you live in Destiny Falls, you learn to accept the supernatural as a normal part of life.
I would have enjoyed spending more time with Han, but he said he needed to get back to work. It hit me that I didnât know what he did at âwork,â since he just showed up when we needed him. One of these days, when we werenât finding dead bodies, kidnappers, or poison, perhaps he and I could actually have a regular conversation! I was looking forward to dinner on Saturday at his home, with him and his sisters. Perhaps I could pull the veil back a bit that evening.
I had the entire afternoon ahead of me before the family dinner. I decided to catch up on my work at home. I wrote up another article about the dead body investigation and reached out to some local folks for my human-interest stories. It seemed rare these days that I had a chunk of uninterrupted hours to work. Even the cats were absent. Time zipped by, and I realized it was time to get ready for dinner. Iâd been so engrossed in my work Iâd skipped lunch, and my stomach growled in protest. I was sure Bear would have something wonderful for dinner to solve that problem.
The dining room was empty, and for just a moment my heart skipped a beat.
