Chapter Thirteen
Devin held Reggie as she cried. âItâs okay Reggie. Itâs over now. Itâs okay.â
Reggie wore Devinâs warm jacket in the cold alleyway, tears running down her cheeks.
Patting her back, he said, âThey took the body away. You donât have to see it again. Itâs all over.â
Madison heard Reggieâs muffled voice. âIâm sorry I canât stop crying. Iâm such a wimp.â
âAre you kidding me? Youâre not a wimp. You just care about people more than you let on.â He patted her back again. âEverythingâs going to be okay.â
Madison kept her arms wrapped around herself. Even if it werenât so cold, sheâd still be shaking. At least this time she wasnât feeling stupid for being scared of a stunt corpse. Not that that was any comfort to Mr. Scary Guy. Sheâd told the police everything she knew about him, which was barely anything at all. She and Mr. Scary Guy had never said a word to each other. At least she could be grateful for that much. But what was he doing out here, and who would want to kill him?
She saw Jeff standing near the door in his silly inspectorâs costume, his arms hanging limp at his side as he watched the medical responders do their work. Normally sheâd want to point out the irony of The Inspector being here among real police officers, but the situation was so real, so frightening, there would be no fun in it.
She went to stand next to him, joining him in watching the emergency vehicle with the body inside drive away. He murmured, âThis has never happened before.â He turned, his eyes searching up and down the alley as if trying to make sense of it, or perhaps wondering what could possibly happen next.
He turned to her. âDo the police know who he was, yet?â
Madison took a deep breath, trying to settle her nerves. âI donât think so. They keep asking around, but so far no one knows him. Pockets were empty, no I.D.â
âThey said youâve seen him before.â
âI saw him here in the alley last night, and the day before in a coffee shop having a latte with a woman. I remembered him because he got so mad at a little boy that ran by and jostled him.â She rubbed her hands up and down her arms.
âHe was here in the alley? Near our door?â
âYes. You and the rest of the cast were about to run through the show again so Reggie and Devin could get in more rehearsal. I had to leave for a while, remember? Then I ran into Beany out here.â
âThatâs right,â he recalled, nodding. âYou brought her inside. Thank goodness.â He blinked, staring down the alley where the emergency vehicle had just turned off. He shook his head. âItâs like a bad dream.â
âJeff.â She gently put her hand on his shoulder. âPromise me youâll keep the door locked from now on. Giving the cast a smoke break isnât worth the danger. Whoever killed that guy couldâve come inside.â
âI know,â he said, his eyes haunted.
