“WHAT’S THIS ABOUT?” Scarlet demanded, entering our conversation at last. My gaze flicked to the screen and I thought I saw something blink in the upper righthand corner before her voice wavered and returned my attention to her face. “You will let Rupert go immediately.”

My boss sounded both tough and scared at the same time. Nothing like herself. I frowned, but obeyed. “Rupert, I release you. You are no longer under my control.”

I tensed, expecting an attack. But Rupert just shook out his arms and cracked his knuckles, squinty eyes taking in the room a second time. “I was promised caviar,” he muttered. “Caviar!”

While the other Lawkeeper regained his bearings, I exchanged a long look with Thom. I couldn’t understand where my guesswork had run off the rails.

Then the fluorescent lights above us flickered, and the dimness seemed to shine a light directly to the heart of the matter. That change I’d noticed in the corner of the computer screen....

I ignored Rupert and leaned in closer, reading the word recording one moment before the red box disappeared.

Then Scarlet’s entire posture tightened. Her voice hardened. “Yes, I taped your unfortunate choice of drawing blood from a Lawkeeper and using that blood in an attempt to compel him to confess to a crime for which he wasn’t responsible. I also have physical evidence placing both you and Mr. Faris at the scene of Friday’s crime.”

Physical evidence? The knot in my stomach pulled tight again and I suddenly understood.

Our cell phones, swaddled in ziplocks to ensure scent remained on the items. That was Scarlet’s evidence. And she’d drawn me here in the first place using an email that could have come from her computer as easily as from Rupert’s.

This was a setup. It had all been a setup.

Not a setup on our part to collar Rupert, although that’s what we’d thought we were taking part in. Instead, everything from my girls’ night out with Charlie to the recorded video-chat session had been a setup in which the real murderer took both me and Thom down with one flick of her perfectly painted fingernail.

Because Scarlet had to be the murderer. She’d killed Janet Allegra, I now guessed, not through any particular antipathy toward military wives. Instead, her victim had just happened to be available when Scarlet needed a warm body to turn cold.

But why fixate on me and Thom?

The why was left to my imagination as Scarlet continued speaking, her voice just as firm and even as it had been in her office when she’d told me to use blood to apprehend Janet Allegra’s murderer. “Turn yourself in,” she ordered. “You and Mr. Faris will both be dealt with according to inter-pack law. Rupert, restrain them.”

This, when it came right down to it, was the only flaw in Scarlet’s plan. The puny man who stole our coffee, our toilet paper, and our paperclips, rose to his full height...which put the crown of his head at approximately my eye level. “Well,” he started. “I guess I can try.
