It took Neeri and Adin a while to connect the control module to the station’s systems and find a link into Spider’s network. It took even longer for them to figure out a way to sneak into his network without him knowing about it. The control module worked like a key unlocking a door into Spider’s systems, but without a way to hide the opening of the door, they may as well walk up to Spider and scream their intentions in his ear.

Ocen watched his brother and Neeri as they worked through the problem, shaking his head in bemused amazement. The two worked together like a fine-tuned machine.

“He’s good for her,” Sasha whispered, leaning against him with a handful of chocolate-covered berries. She popped one in her mouth and chewed, watching the other two. “Look how calm she is.”

“If you don’t want me hearing you, don’t talk out loud, human,” Neeri commented without lifting her gaze from their work.

Sasha snorted and muttered, “Freaky cat ears.”

Ocen smiled and wrapped an arm around her. You are right, he is good for her. Whether she is good for him is still under debate.

Sasha shot him a sharp look. How can you say that? She’s kept him from going crazy with mating burn, hasn’t she?

Yes, but I worry about his heart. He has become deeply attached to her.

She sighed. That’s a problem. What if she doesn’t feel the same about him?

Adin’s head snapped up, gaze reproachful. And if you don’t want me hearing you, don’t talk at all.

“Oh, geez, sorry, Adin,” Sasha winced. “I can’t block thoughts like you guys can. I’m just worried, is all.”

You have a true heart, near-sister. Apology accepted. He went back to work, but Neeri paused with a frown. “Worried about what?”

“Pretty much everything,” Sasha mumbled and met Ocen’s gaze. What does near-sister mean?

His heart skipped a beat and then raced in his chest. He’d been doing his best to avoid this question. The answer would lead him into treacherous territory. He was hunting for a safe reply when Adin answered for him.

It means you are the sister of my heart, not my blood. You are mated to my brother, making you my near-sister.

Sasha went still and Ocen sighed, sending a private thought to his brother. Adin, you have seaweed for brains.

Adin’s head jerked up again, expression going from hurt confusion to contrition. Oh. She doesn’t know.

I believe she has some idea now, little brother.

Adin winced. Sorry…

But Sasha was looking at him in the dim light and he couldn’t spare his brother any further attention. “Mated?” she whispered, and he couldn’t tell if it was shock or terror on her lovely features.

He cupped her face in one hand and rested his forehead against hers, brushing her soft skin with small, soothing strokes. My feelings for you are very strong. My brother is aware of them and has made certain assumptions. Please know, Sasha, I would never claim a mating without your consent. You are free to make your own—

“Could you…shut up for a second?” she said, her breath brushing light and fast over his scales.
