Chapter 16

I sat at the kitchen island confused and in shock at Cathy's words. "You're sure? Pepper is protecting her daughter by trying to make it look like Kim killed Jackie? And you think Pepper hit herself? Knowing you were downstairs and would know Kim was upstairs?"

Cathy's face was chalky white. She kept shredding a paper napkin.

The kitchen felt chilly, the coffee's aroma mocking us. Pauline and I sat on our stools at the marble island like statues. It was a little past noon. Two of the women trundled down the staircase and headed outside for their trip to Sister Bay.

Pauline said, "That sounds far-fetched, Cathy. Sorry."

My former mother-in-law finished shredding the napkin. She scooped it into a neat pile atop the countertop island. "I know it does. Women's intuition is always crazy."

"Zadie and Yola stayed in, though. That's what they've said."

Cathy shrugged, rising. "There's something Pepper is holding in. And she did suffer that cut on her head. If she didn't do it to herself to protect her daughter, then Kim did it on purpose." She shuddered.

"So you think it's possible Kim murdered Jackie? She snuck out after everybody went upstairs on Saturday night?"

"Ask the sheriff what he found on the hammer."

"He likely didn't find Kim's fingerprints. She's always wearing those white gloves."

I didn't say another word because the rest of the women came down the stairs. Eliza came into the kitchen to collect Cathy, then off they went on their trip.

Pauline got off her stool. "I know that look. You think Cathy's right?"

"She's a shrewd businesswoman. Why didn't I think of this before? We need to be looking for a pair of white gloves, preferably finding a pair doused with Pepper's blood."

"Can I eat first? I'm starving?"

"Sure. They'll be gone for a couple of hours. I have leftover pizza."

"Perfect."

We gobbled down a piece each, then hurried upstairs to scour Kim's room.
