CHAPTER 16

“Suzie, where’s Lola?” Mary walked into the kitchen as Suzie picked up the coffeepot.

“Oh, I think she’s packing up all of her things. She’s scared, and she wants to get out of here.” Suzie poured herself a cup of coffee. “Would you like one?”

“Thank you. Poppy is absolutely certain Lola would have nothing to do with Carl finding out where she and Frank are hiding out. But I’m not sure that I’m convinced.” Mary accepted a cup of coffee from Suzie.

“Me, neither.”

Mary and Suzie told each other what they’d learned from Lola and Poppy.

“Now, the question I have is, did Morrison send Carl? Or is there some other issue between Carl and Frank? As scared as Frank seems to be, I’d say he believes that whoever Morrison sent intends to kill them both.” Suzie had a sip of coffee.

“I think Jason’s going to want to question Lola, and maybe even Poppy. But the problem is, they’ll both likely lawyer up just like Frank did. They’re all too scared. If only there was a way we could make them all feel just a little bit safer.”

A shout from the back porch drew both of them to look out through the kitchen window. Lola and Poppy were standing on the porch. Both looked furious as they glowered at each other.

Mary put down her coffee cup and started toward the door. Suzie ran behind her

“What’s going on?” Mary hurried over to Poppy and Lola.

Paul and Wes ran up the steps that led to the porch from the backyard.

“What’s happening here?” Wes asked.

“How could you?” Lola’s voice wavered. “How could you ever think I would do something like that?”

“I would never want to believe it, but the more I think about it, what other explanation is there. You knew where we were. Carl works for Morrison. How else could Carl have found out we were here?” Poppy raised her voice as Mary continued to stand right beside them while Suzie stood close by.

“If you’d listened to me, you wouldn’t be here at all,” Lola huffed. “I warned you Frank got himself into something dangerous. I told you to stay away from him.”

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.” Poppy raised her voice even further. “You’re supposed to be my best friend. I didn’t tell Carl we were here, and neither did Frank, so how did he know, Lola? How?”

“Let’s all try to take a breath here.” Paul held up his hands. “This isn’t going to help anyone. If we want to figure this out, we need to work together.”

“Oh, keep quiet.” Poppy turned her glare on him. “You probably told Carl. For all I know, you could be the one who’s been hired to kill me.”

“What?” Paul took a sharp breath as his eyes widened. “That’s absolutely not true.”

“All right, settle down!” Wes’ voice took on a distinctive authoritative tone. “All of these accusations are getting us nowhere. Right now, the most important thing is to get to the bottom of this.”

“Absolutely not!” Lola turned around.
