Chapter Seventeen

“UGH, WHY IS this place so fucking loud?” Harriet groaned as the two of us entered the B Library.

“It was loud back in our high school’s library,” I reminded her. “How is this any different?”

Harriet rubbed her temples, no doubt trying to get rid of a migraine. Fae have enhanced hearing—not as much as a shifter, mind—but for Harriet, loud noises (especially if it’s a crowd of people talking) will get her agitated.

“In high school there weren’t many people in the library,” Harriet said. “Here, nearly the entire fucking school spends their break in the libraries.”

I couldn’t help but laugh at that. “You can be so dramatic sometimes.”

Harriet rolled her eyes and grumbled something under her breath as the two of us headed towards a table in the back. Dana and the twins were already there waiting for us.

“How are you feeling?” Eli asked.

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes and pulled out the tablet Professor Wolfe gave me. He said it’d come in handy for staying organised, and I have yet to figure out how. My notes are just as sporadic and chaotic as when I write them on paper.

“A little better,” I lied. “My skin still looks completely disgusting, but the pain is going away.”

“I didn’t mean physically,” Eli said. “Physically, you’re damaged and you can't even deny that. I meant, how are you feeling mentally ? And be honest.”

I sighed. “Shitty. You think I’m damaged physically? You have no idea what goes inside my head after that day.”

Eli’s jaw clenched, but Arden was quick to change the subject.

“Did you get the notes I emailed you for Demonology?” he asked, turning to face me.

I nodded as I clicked on the document Arden was talking about. “Yeah, I got it last night. Thanks again for that.”

Arden lifted a shoulder in a shrug. “It’s no problem. I know you’ve been busy with other things.”

“Are you guys excited for Samhain?” Dana asked. “I heard the academy holds some kind of fete for it.”

I internally groaned. Samhain was my least favourite day of the year. And it’s not because of what it represents but because it was my birthday. I’ve always been teased for it since back in the First World humans celebrated October thirty-first as Halloween. Even though no one at Hellebore Academy knew when my birthday was, I still wasn’t in the brightest of moods.

Eli shrugged. “I couldn’t care less about that,” he said. “Faerie celebrations aren’t really my thing.”

Arden scoffed. “ Our thing.”

Eli rolled his eyes.

“I think it’d be great,” Harriet mused trying to brighten our spirits. I remained silent, not wanting to be involved with this conversation and instead focused on the notes Arden sent me. I missed my last Demonology class due to … unfortunate circumstances, and Professor Merida made it perfectly clear that if I didn’t pass next month’s exam, she’d give me extra work for the break in December.

“Shit, I almost forgot,” I said, shoving my tablet back into my bag and getting up from my chair.
