The open kitchen at Le Pigeon.

The bar at Olympia Provisions.

★★ Nostrana INNER SOUTHEAST ITALIAN The wood-oven pizzas and pasta dishes get high praise, but it’s the little details that help make Nostrana special, like the fresh-crushed olive oil for dipping your home-baked bread. Cathy Whims is a champion of simple Italian cooking using the freshest of local ingredients. Good for lunch, too, with great pork sandwiches. 1401 SE Morrison St. (at 14th Ave.). ☎ 503/234-2427. www.nostrana.com. Lunch $10–$19; dinner $19–29. Lunch Mon–Fri; dinner daily. Bus: 15. Map p 98.

★★ Olympia Provisions INNER SOUTHEAST CHARCUTERIE The big lighted sign that says “meat” sums up this place, which offers the best salami, sausage, bratwurst, franks, and charcuterie plates in town. All the products are handcrafted. This ain’t your typical hot dog vendor! There’s a second location at 1384 SE Division St. (☎ 503/384-2259). 126 SW 2nd Ave. (in Pine St. Market). ☎ 917/386-2199. www.olympiaprovisions.com. Entrees $14–$18. Lunch & dinner daily. MAX: SW 3rd & Oak. Map p 98.

★ Pacific Pie EASTSIDE INDUSTRIAL BRITISH Here you’ll find those savory meat pies the Brits invented and that don’t often appear on American menus: shepherd’s pie, lamb pie, steak pie, pork pie, fish pie—and the more familiar chicken pot pie. The ingredients are fresh and local, and entrees come with soup or salad. Gluten-free and vegetarian casseroles, wraps, and pies are also available. Oh yes, the sweet kind of pie is available, too, and just as good. 1520 SE 7th Ave. ☎ 503/381-6157. www.pacificpie.com. Entrees $13–$15. Lunch & dinner daily. Streetcar: SE Grand & Main. Map p 98.

★★ Paley’s Place NORTHWEST FRENCH Iron Chef America and James Beard award winner Vitaly Paley helped to start the Portland food craze back in 1995 in this Victorian home in Nob Hill. The menu relies on locally sourced meat and produce, with dishes such as marinated and grilled quail, and butternut squash and goat cheese ravioli. 204 NW 21st Ave. (at Northrup St.). ☎ 503/243-2403. www.paleysplace.net. Entrees $17–$36. Dinner daily. Streetcar: NW Marshall & 22nd. Bus: 17. Map p 97.

★ Pambiche NORTHEAST CUBAN You can’t miss the colorful building, and the Cuban creole food is just as exciting, from the “Plato Comunista” (beans and rice) to the classic rubbed pork sandwiches and braised oxtails. 2811 NE Glisan St. (at 28th Ave.). ☎ 503/233-0511. Entrees $9–$17. Lunch & dinner daily; brunch Sat–Sun. Bus: 19. Map p 99.

★ Papa Haydn NORTHWEST AMERICAN The food at this long-established restaurant is reliably good if not adventurous, but that’s also what the patrons like. Nice spot to lunch on “Trendy-third.” 701 NW 23rd Ave. (at Irving St.). ☎ 503/228-7317. www.papahaydn.com. Entrees $13–$26. Lunch & dinner daily. Bus: 15. Map p 97.

★★ Pazzo DOWNTOWN ITALIAN/PACIFIC NORTHWEST This time-honored downtown restaurant excels with its homemade pastas. The pappardelle “with grandma’s special Sunday meat sauce” (a veal, pork, and beef ragu) is meraviglioso, and the Caesar salad is maybe the best in town. Inspired desserts, too, but those are not necessarily Italian. 627 SW Washington St. (in Hotel Vintage).
