REAL GOSPEL, NO brunch

You could do the slick “Gospel Brunch” at the House of Blues, or you could experience the real thing in a real place of worship. Don’t expect fancy robes or masses of choir members, just rooms and rooms full of spirit. Try Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 1126 N. Robertson St. ( 504/525-0507). It’s humble, right, and true (and Pastor Joshua’s preaching can get pretty fiery). You may well be the only non-parishioner there, but the modest congregation is welcoming; show some mutual respect when the collection plate comes ’round. Sunday services are at 10:30am to noon-ish; communion service on the first Sunday of the month runs longer.

For a different musical religious experience, take in the jazzy Sunday 10am Mass at historic St. Augustine’s, 1210 Governor Nicholls St. ( 504/525-5934; www.staugustinecatholicchurch-neworleans.org). Home church for many a famous local musician, like Sidney Bechet, the Sunday Mass now incorporates New Orleans–tinged music and cultural color. Tip: Right afterward (at noon), the talented Holy Faith Baptist Temple band seriously rocks the house of worship just up the street at 1225 Governor Nicholls St. ( 504/525-0856).

And if you must have that brunch, get to nearby Lil Dizzy’s afterward.
