Tommy

Tommy stepped into the utter chaos on deck. Men continued to attack the creature’s massive arms while avoiding their grasp. Why hadn’t it crushed them yet? By the size of the tentacles reaching out of the inky black sea, the legends had not exaggerated the kraken’s size. It could easily wrap itself around the hull and tear the ship in two. Yet it hadn’t.

He’d left Aoife in the doorway. She’d need to take care of herself.

Declan will never forgive you if something happens to her.

Though that would cease to matter if he didn’t focus on getting them free of this monster.

Tommy cupped his hands around his mouth and called for Mikkel. When the bo’sun arrived, he leaned in close. “Get as many men as you can below on the cannons. Aim for the widest sections. With precision.”

“Aye, sir.” It was the first time he’d been called that since assuming command.

Nothing more than habit for Mikkel though.

“Have some of them keep an eye on the hull and patch up whatever they can with whatever they have.”

The man nodded and left to carry out the command. Tommy bounded up the quarterdeck stairs two at a time. Bria hadn’t left her position at the rail, and Renna was beside her, silent but attentive. The sails still filled with the wind Bria summoned, but a glance at the sea told him her work wasn’t helping to free them.

Rushing over to the two fae, he called out, “Renna, have her stop!”

Renna shot him a questioning look.

“It’s holding us in place. Toying with us. We’re just draining Bria’s magic.” He didn’t know how to pull a fae out of whatever this trance was. Last thing he wanted was to do it wrong and worsen their situation.

Without so much as a nod, Renna turned her attention to Bria and silently took her hand in hers. A few breaths later, Bria’s eyes flashed open and focused on Renna before snapping to Tommy.

“Why did—” she began, but he held up a hand.

“Can you summon it quickly? Strongly?” He sounded like a buffoon, but he had no time to worry about how he phrased things at the moment. “Or do you need to be in that intense state as you have been?”

Her brow quirked up. “I can, but it doesn’t last long.”

“Are you able to ease back into a steady rhythm without issue?”

She nodded, but concern filled her eyes. “Yes, but I’m running dangerously low. We will need to be careful.”

Cannons began firing beneath them, and Tommy turned to watch as the kraken’s limbs pulled back and retreated with each blow. They returned as quickly as they had fled, but still, the shots did better than he’d expected. His hope sparked.

If they could time it well, it might work.

It had to work.

“On my signal, summon as strong a burst as you can to propel us. Then maintain it, giving it as much as you can until we get away.”

Bria eyed him quizzically.

“Renna,” he continued, “you can tell how she’s faring, yes?” A solemn nod.
