I take the stool at the bar to Leoâs right. âStrange day, brother?â he asks as I take the beer Eno sits in front of me.
âYou have no fucking idea.â I take a drink and look at my boys.
âWe need to talk about what you think Markus might do and lay out a plan.â Leo orders.
âTomorrow morning?â Leo asks.
âYeah.â We all agree and sit together and drink in silence.

Dinner was great and the food was wonderful. The atmosphere was better than I could have expected. Even Hollis seemed to have enjoyed herself. Weâd helped clean up then said our goodbyes. Leo had offered me his truck, so I pulled my bike into the garage.
âWhat did Emily mean when she said she would see you at eight in the morning?â I glance at her but for the first time tonight, I really see her. Her skin is glowing and she hasnât stopped smiling all night.
âOh, she asked me to help her with her cleaning business.â She looks at me. âI got a job, Roman. A real, honest job where I donât have to take my clothes off.â I furrow my brow at her. âOh no, donât look at me like that.â
âDo you not remember the conversation we had last night about Markus?â
âI do, but I wonât be alone, Iâll be with Emily.â
I take a deep breath and try to figure out the best way to approach this situation. Sheâs glowing and I know she needs this, but I donât like the two of them being alone all day.
âPlease, Roman, donât take this away from me.â Her once happy face has turned into a desperate, pleading look.
âDamn, Hollis,â I sigh. âOkay, but listen. You give me a full day itinerary and call me every thirty minutes.â
âWhat? Why? If I have to call you that much, I wonât be able to get anything done.â Sheâs turned her body in the seat so that sheâs facing me. âPlus, I donât have a phone.â
âIâll fix that tomorrow, but this is the way it is or you donât go.â I hope Iâve conveyed my point with my stern tone. I meant what I said, she either agrees or she doesnât step foot out of the house.
âYouâre serious, arenât you?â She asks a bit shocked.
âHell yeah Iâm serious. Take it or leave it.â I can feel the muscle ticking in my jaw.
Her cheeks flush with anger. âLook, Romanââ
I interrupt her. âDonât âlook Romanâ me. You know what heâs capable of, and when, not if, he goes back to that house and finds it empty, you know what heâs going to do.â
âYes, I do, but Iâm sure you and the others will never be far away. I feel safe with Emily ⦠itâs weird, but I do.â
âI know you do, but you can never let your guard down with him out there. We have no idea who heâll have with him or where heâs at, and we both know he doesnât discriminate against who he hurts.â
âI know better than anyone, Roman.
