Sancho’s Diary and His Life in Palma

Cabot’s overview of Sancho’s life can be put in clearer focus using Sancho’s “diary,” a tiny but invaluable booklet that I discovered at the Bancroft Library in Berkeley.22 In the fall of 2005, I was shuffling through the random mishmash of folders, identified as “mission miscellany” in the Bancroft Library under the call number C-C-73, and I stumbled upon a tiny four-page pamphlet whose first sheet contained printed papal bulls in miniature type. The library catalogued the pocket-size booklet as “Fragment from printed book of Papal Bulls, 1631 with mss. notes, 1772–1804.”23 A snippet of the title page has been torn off, but nonetheless one can decipher “SUM[ ]A BULLÆ SS. D. N. Urbani VIII . . . data Romæ die 25. Januari i anno 1631,” hence supplying the “1631” date used by the Bancroft Library in cataloguing this item. If one turns the page, the flip side of this folio reveals another papal bull, “CONSTIT[ ]IO SS. D. N. INNOCENTII PAPÆ XII. . . . ” My heart began to race, however, when I noticed—scribbled near the bottom of the first page—the annotation that read: “y â la Nueva Califa llegue dia 15 de Agsto de 1804” (and I arrived in New California the 15th day of August 1804).
