“Nasty trap. We’re moving.” Aisling ran into the hallway and dashed after the mechanical dragon with Will at her back. She slid to a stop before she reached the electrical panels, primed a grenade, and tossed it. Its detonation smashed the trap’s electronics and eliminated that danger. Another explosion sounded from ahead as Shimmer reduced another turret to its component pieces.

By the time they reached the end of the hallway, the dragon’s body was a mishmash of pristine scales and ones that looked too damaged to offer any protection. She and Will were both out of grenades, and it had required four of her limited supply of stun darts to disable the last trap. She hoped she wouldn’t find another identical corridor waiting for her around the corner. They were ill-equipped to deal with the situation if the place was a maze of traps that spiraled inward.

Aisling drew a deep breath, whispered a wish, and threw the sphere she’d retrieved around the next corner. Its cameras showed a hallway like the ones on the floor above, although the shadows suggested it had openings only on one side rather than both. In the brief moment before its cameras went dark, it also revealed the flash of a black tactical uniform as someone leaned out from one opening and hosed the sphere with automatic weapon fire.

She flinched involuntarily at the sight. “Well. That’s something different, anyway.”

Will replied, “Arguably better than robots.”

“Emphasis on arguably.”

Shimmer suggested, “I should lead again.”

Aisling agreed, “Yes, but only by a little. You run past the first opening, and if someone pops out to shoot you, we’ll nail him. Slow down afterward to see if that works. If it does, we’ll rinse and repeat until it doesn’t.”

“Claws?”

“Only as a last resort. Keep them sheathed. These folks are arguably our allies. No killing unless we absolutely have to.”

“Got it. Ready?”

Will replied, “As much as I’ll ever be. Go.”

Shimmer raced forward and flashed by the first intersection. Gunfire missed as he crossed the opening, and the black uniform appeared as a guard leaned out to try again.

Aisling shot him with a stun dart, then checked the corridor for additional threats. None were present.

Will stayed back to slip a tranquilizer tab into the fallen man’s mouth while she followed the dragon. The same scene played out on the next one, but this time she stayed to tranquilize the man she’d shot while Will moved up behind Shimmer to deal with the next one.
