Laying back in the sauna, I finished telling Sari my werewolf story. We had shared the leftover ‘purification’ tea that I had made and drank some of the night before.

“That was a bold gambit! What would you have done if he’d wanted to fool around with you?” Sari asked. We had gotten in the sauna after Linus left for work and were building up a good sweat. I wore a towel and Sari was relaxing Finnish style.

“Heh, then we would have fooled around I guess,” I admitted with a nervous chuckle.

“Do you really like werewolves that much,” she asked.

I responded, “I do. It’s a shame things never worked out with Mark. He was my werewolf boyfriend in college. He’s becoming a buddhist monk in Thailand now.”

“Why did you let him run away to Thailand?” she asked.

“The sex was great, but everything else was just ok,” I explained. “The only, minor, issue with the sex was I’d always end up with hairs in my mouth. One time, he actually wanted me to ‘acknowledge my rich, female, privilege’ if you can believe that. He always had a chip on his shoulder about my family’s money, but his mother was a dentist in the Bay Area. I always felt like he was throwing stones in a glass house, you know?”

“Hmm,” she acknowledged my story. “Flog me with the birch whip you brought back.”

“Flog you?” I asked with a chuckle.

“Is that not the right word?” she clarified. “You strike with the branch and it helps the circulation. We call it a vihta.”

“I guess so,” I said. “Flog usually means a real punishment. Maybe whip or whisk would be the right term. Even whip is a bit violent.”

“Whisk me with the vihta then,” she clarified.
