“Fiancé,” I snapped at the ghost. “He’s not my boyfriend. He’s my fiancé.”

And he had a reason for lying to me, for pulling away these last few weeks.

“I’d bet Riggs didn’t show until a week after Owen was released from the hospital,” I mused. “That’s why he was so normal for the week he was living with me at the B and B, and why he suddenly moved back to his apartment even though he still needed so much help.”

Understanding crashed into compassion inside my heart. I wanted to pull him into a hug and tell him … everything. I could, now. It wasn’t as if I couldn’t before. I had always planned on letting him in on my secret … eventually.

But this made everything so much easier.

I stood, about to leave, to run to him, before I remembered I was watching the front desk for Officer Perkins. Wrinkling my nose, I huffed in frustration and reclaimed my seat.

“Ah, finding yourself having to lie in the bed you made? Well, more like sit in the chair you made,” Olivia said, obviously trying to sound wise, but her failed turn of phrase just made me chuckle at her.

And then I couldn’t stop laughing. Because Owen was the same as me. Sure, the fact that he’d had such a near-death experience and had been so affected by the loss of his partner that he’d begun to see ghosts was awful. I wouldn’t wish the cause on anyone. But the effect? It wasn’t so bad. Especially not when you had someone who understood.

Using the time I had to stay put, I texted Owen.

What are you up to right now? Do you want to have lunch?
