“Porter, before we go inside, there’s something I want to talk to you about.”

“Okay,” Porter said warily.

“I want you to know that I’m proud of all you’ve learned so far and how hard you’re trying to adjust to this new life.”

“Thanks?”

“I’m happy that I got to meet you, and I want you to know that I’m honored to be your big brother. I’ll do anything to make you happy and give you a family outside the compound.”

Porter was more sincere this time when he said, “Thanks.”

“I know you’re still having some issues sleeping, and things around you get to be too much sometimes, so Freya has worked to help me find a way to try and make that better.”

“The closet idea really helped. I’m sleeping a lot better, but I do wake up a lot and get freaked out that I’m alone.” I smiled down at him, knowing that what we were about to do was going to improve not just that problem, but a host of others. I unlocked the door and could hear movement inside the apartment. I glanced back at Porter and saw him looking around. “Is Lucy in here? That doesn’t sound like Lucy.”

“You should go check the laundry room,” Freya suggested.

Freya and I followed Porter through the apartment toward the laundry room. He slid the door open and a huge ball of energy bounded out and ran around his legs. Porter gasped and dropped to one knee so he could pet the dog. I felt tears prick my eyes when the dog stopped in front of him and sat down. He lifted his paw and batted at Porter as they inspected each other.

“Who are you?” Porter whispered as he reached out and shook the dog’s paw. As soon as he let go, the dog stepped closer and rubbed its face against Porter’s cheek. Porter threw his arms around the dog and hugged him. I heard Freya sniff and looked over to see she had tears streaming down her cheeks. I put my hand out, and she grabbed it as she took a deep breath. Porter was still holding onto the dog who seemed to be smiling as he sat patiently in front of the boy.

“His name is Amigo. My brother brought him from Texas to live with you,” Freya explained.

“With me?” Porter asked as he leaned back and put his hands on the dog’s cheeks. He ran his hands down and started scratching at the scruff on the dog’s neck, causing the tags on his collar to jingle. Porter looked up at me and asked, “I can keep him?”

“Yes. We were hoping the two of you would get along. If you didn’t, then we would find another one, but . . .”

“Oh, I like him,” Porter whispered as he smiled at the dog. Amigo’s tail was whipping back and forth, and I could tell he felt the same about Porter.

“He’s going to be your dog, Porter. You’ll take care of him just like Freya takes care of Lucy and the girls take care of their herd.
