Chapter Six

SUMMER

She couldn’t believe it, the float was actually going to be ready early. Not to mention, it was turning out even better than she expected. She stepped back and wiped her brow. The honey jar had been shored up, and the men were almost finished constructing the new beehive. Ace had built the tree to place it into and she could tell it would be strong and sturdy enough to hold the weight of the hive. She and the other workers were nearly done painting the row of flowers around it as well; all that was left was the final detailing on the petals and the little bumblebees in the centers. The arrangement would look adorable.

“This is gonna be really good,” said one of the younger workers beside her named Eddie. She placed him somewhere in his late teens or early 20s.

“I know, right?” she said. “I love the stenciling you did for the company’s logo, by the way. It’s perfect. Do you paint on the side?”

Eddie nodded proudly. “Yeah, it’s just a hobby for now, but I’m hoping to become a journeyman painter someday.”

Ace walked up from around the side of the float. “You’d be great at that,” he said. “If you’d like, I can put you in touch with a buddy of mine who owns a painting business. I’m sure he could use someone like you as an apprentice, who has the raw talent and is eager to learn.”

“Really?” Eddie said, his brown eyes widening. “I’d really appreciate that. Thanks, man!” He and Ace exchanged a high-five.

A breeze blew in off the water, suddenly ruffling her hair. She tucked a stray curl back behind her ear. The past few days had been like a dream, being outdoors in the summertime in a gorgeous setting and working with her hands for a change felt wonderful. Even at the hottest time of day, the wind blowing in over the water kept temperatures down. She and Ace called in plenty of food and beverages each day to make sure everyone stayed fed and adequately hydrated. It was amazing to see how much they’d all come together too as a team, under Ace’s leadership. She listened as friendships formed between the men, and they helped each other out now without having to be asked. She and Ace had been meeting in the mornings for breakfast, during which time they’d review their task list and plan what jobs they wanted to complete that day. In the evenings, they’d have dinner and review the day’s successes and talk about what could be improved upon going forward. It was becoming a routine she looked forward to. What would happen after the Fourth when the parade was over?

“Want to help me while I build out the tree branches to hold the beehive?” asked Ace.

“Sure,” she said, following him over to the structure.

“Okay, I’m going to position the ladder and climb up. If you could hand me supplies as I call for them that would be great.
