Chapter 10

“Why don’t y’all come to the dining room for a glass of wine?” Steve said from the foyer.

Shoot. She and Cace had been trying to sneak by without drawing attention to themselves, since they couldn’t use the back door. The police were still working the crime scene. The last thing she wanted was to talk to Steve, Darla, and Marlene. Food sat solo as Sunny’s priority right now. Besides, who heard of hosting a happy hour—no matter how late—while the police were still on the property for a murder investigation?

Sunny pasted on an enormous smile and hooked a thumb to the front door. “We’re just going to grab dinner.” And talk about what just happened.

“One glass of wine won’t hurt,” Marlene said from the hallway to the dining room. The slight slur to her words said she’d had more than one. Probably more than three.

She slid a glance to Cace, and the tilt to his head said they could make an appearance, so she took his hand and they followed a weaving Marlene to the happy hour.

Cace suggested they table discussing the events surrounding Sarah’s death and the interviews for the walk to dinner. Reluctantly, Sunny agreed. If only she had taken a bit longer to get ready for dinner with the Beckers, there wouldn’t have been time for the side-trip to the inn’s gathering.

Once in the dining room, Sunny’s gaze strayed to the long side table. She scanned past the wine bottles and found the slab pies. Her stomach did a traitorous dance. She’d forgotten about those. And what did Granma say had been her father’s mantra when he ate from his lunchbox at the brickworks? ‘Life is short. Always eat dessert first.’

Despite the promise of the Becker’s dinner, she tugged Cace toward the pie. She hadn’t gotten the coconut cream today, but her taste buds liked the idea of Butterscotch Bourbon Apple.

Darla poured Sunny a white wine, but Cace declined, accepting a piece of the Cherries Jubilee from Steve. Sunny took a couple of steps to the smaller table with two chairs in the far corner of the room which Tyrone and Keira had occupied during brunch. Hopefully, no one else would bother them.

As she sat, her gaze caught on a person huddling in the corner opposite, far from the glow of any lamp, as if a specter huddling in the shadows. The unexpectedness caused her to juggle her plate, almost dumping her pie on the floor. She managed to hang on to her food and save herself the humiliation, if not the elevated heart rate.

The second glance revealed Gwen. Clad in a gray twinset and gray pants, she did appear a ghost, down to the silvery-blonde of her hair pulled into a low ponytail. A melancholy air had settled around the woman. Not a surprise considering her husband had been murdered, and now the employee he’d been having an affair with had been murdered as well. Certainly, she’d be at the top of the suspect list.
