Harry Nelson
McCrary left and Harry Nelson drew in a long breath and let it out. His heart rate slowed.
Funny to feel his heart beat so fast. He wondered what his friend would say about McCraryâs surprise visit after all these years. His friend always gave good advice. Sometimes the advice came in a dream, sometimes in a nightmare. But always good advice, and always in the middle of the night.
Nelson had never seen a guy nurse a beer as long as McCrary. And what was the deal with those questions that had nothing to do with Emily Crazinski? He should discuss that with his friend. McCrary acted like he knew something he could not possibly know. No, it couldnât be. There was no way McCrary knew that.
He would ask his friendâs opinion.
Why did McCrary come poking around his house again after all this time? The PI was cool with him four years ago. Did he suspect something? How could he? What tipped him off? And why the hell had he let McCrary inside? He should have stonewalled him. Thatâs what his friend would advise. Itâs not like McCrary could get a search warrant. He wasnât a cop. Nelson ought to have insisted that they speak on the porch. McCrary would have had to agree. On the other hand, not letting him in would look suspicious. Surely his friend would agree he couldnât afford to appear suspicious.
Too late to worry. McCrary had been inside and Nelson couldnât rewind the clock.
Nelson picked up the empty bottles and surveyed the living room.
He heard his friend warn him. What had he overlooked?
Wait a minute. He left McCrary alone while he went to fetch their beers. His friend would say that detectives were professional snoops, wouldnât he?
One couch cushion was an inch out of line. Nelson kept a neat house, no matter what he told McCrary. He opened the China cabinet. His neatly stacked napkins lay askew. He jerked open the buffet drawers. Same thing.
That freakinâ McCrary had riffled through the room while Nelson was in the kitchen. His friend would be disappointed when he told him. Well, he wouldnât tell his friend. He didnât have to tell him everything, did he?
Nelsonâs heart rate climbed again. His attention cut to the television cabinet. He stepped to the drawers and opened the first one.
Something was different in the rack of DVDs. He looked again to determine which disks were gone.
Uh-oh. The detective had rearranged the disks hoping Nelson wouldnât notice. Nelson heard his friend say, âHeâs on to something.â
McCrary had stolen two of his pretties. What if he connected the dots?
Nelson wouldnât tell his friend about the missing disks. What his friend didnât know wouldnât hurt him. At least, it wouldnât worry him.
But McCrary had two disks. That was unacceptable. It was time to act.
Nelson booted his laptop.
In The Art of War, Sun Tzu said, âKnow your enemy.â
He opened a search engine.
