chapter thirteen

After much discussion, Falcor agreed to shift Nick and me into the area of the warehouse. He was perfectly willing to take me but didn't even want the vampires to help us. He figured as long as I was there to freeze all the vampires, he could take care of the rest. But, since Nick was technically the king of all vampires, that didn’t fly and Farand put his foot down. Plus, there was the fact we weren't sure I could even do that on my own. Not with so many. I had only accomplished that the last time thanks to Colvin. I was quite sure, it was only thanks to him, anyway. Falcor wasn’t thinking straight. I would have to be his common sense.

I couldn't understand Falcor anymore than his father seemed able to. Farand and I shared more than one exasperated glance before we got everything settled.

Nick had agreed with Falcor that any vampire who had gone rogue would need to be put down or restrained and delivered to the DPI for containment. That seemed to be the only thing that settled Falcor's ire.

My feet touched down on damp grass outside a warehouse that sat perched on the edge of the river. The steel-sided building was rusty in some places and the pavement that circled the building had cracks opportunistic weeds had sprung from, clinging precariously to life as the sun blazed down turning the steel and asphalt into an oven.

Falcor used a complicated set of hand signals instead of words, communicating with Nick.

Sometimes I forgot they grew up together, but it was obvious when Nick gave a curt nod and they split up, moving toward the building on silent feet. I was going to follow Nick, but then thought better of it and trailed along behind Falcor. He was the one who I would need to keep an eye on.

Farand and Jax as well as one of Farand's guards, appeared on the opposite side of the building as we moved around the back corner. They each moved stealthily toward the building, Farand and his guard moving toward the direction Nick had gone and Jax heading toward Falcor and me.

Falcor stopped at a steel door, his long fingers wrapping around the knob and silently turning. When it moved, he glanced over his shoulder at me and Jax, giving a quick nod and then slipped the door open.

The tension was cranking up inside me. I could feel the pull of my magic, wanting to fan out and touch all the vampires inside. But I held it down, waiting for the right time to use my power.

My feet on the cracked cement floor were the only sound. The more I tried to move silently, the more my shuffling seemed to echo through the place.

Jax’s hand rested at the small of my back like he was telling me he was there and would protect me if anything happened.

My first reaction was to lean back into the hand, let him support me and protect me.
