Chapter 20

JARRED SERICEUS

I certainly hadn’t expected things to go the way they had. I’d heard about how she’d been getting on in the Mortal Realm through whispers and judgements from the Elder Fae Council for a few years now. Few in the Elder Fae Council but for Aura Moonrose were to be trusted and as soon as I’d secured the girl’s safety through her, I’d distanced myself. Even Aura, wasn’t someone I’d shared the whole truth with. Knowledge of Autumn’s true identity hadn’t been her burden to bear. She just knew that this was a changeling to protect.

When she finally came to Faerie to either come into her powers or die like the rest of the changelings, I’d decided to set her up for success as I’d once promised a dear friend but would keep out of it and let things run their course. If she was forgotten, it would be the end of a legacy. Despite my promise made more than two decades ago, I too needed my life and sanity back. And peace.

“What can I do for you, Prince Jarred?” asked Aura Moonrose, walking into my wasted classroom. She stopped, stunned at the sight.

“I’ve offered to be Autumn’s guide.” I said, gesturing at the wreckage to show her the girl’s power, which still reverberated all around us. Like a huge dam that had burst instead of a trickle.

“I thought as much,” grinned the dean. Then she turned pensive, “I’ve known Prince Fern since he was tiny and his parents came to the throne.” She looked to me as if I should have known where she was going.

“And?”

“I’ve been watching him. He’s taken by Autumn. I’m pretty sure he’s been wanting to share it with me. I think they have a mate bond – as forbidden as it is. I can feel it easily in his aura when he’s been around her.”

“Hmm,” was all I could say as conflict bubbled up from within. This was information I didn’t need, especially when…”

“Huh,” uttered Aura, scrutinizing me too much for my liking. Her expression remained collected but her eyes told me she’d sensed the same energy from my aura.

“Anyway, I’ve called Prince Asher,” I said wrapping it up, “he’ll be over any minute.”

“Of course,” replied the dean, taking her leave.

Looking about the destroyed classroom I found myself feeling a renewed sense of, not exactly hope – because what was there to hope for these days? – but something else. An aliveness I hadn’t felt for many years since I’d lost Soleil. And in person the resemblance between them was striking.

Yet she wasn’t Soleil. But she held an exquisite richness to her energy that made me drawn to her in ways I could never have foreseen. I sat down under a tree – those were the only parts of the class not ruined by her insatiable power – and waited for Prince Asher to whom I’d sent the butterfly to relay my message about the evolving situation with the changeling. With Autumn. I also had some questions to which he long owed me answers.
